Ireland's Business Insights H1 2026

Insights Into Start-Up Resilience, Market Challenges, and The Changing Risk Environment

The first half of 2026 paints a picture of strong resilience across the Irish business landscape, with start-ups increasing by 13% year-over-year, supported by a marked reduction in financial distress. Company start-ups reached 14,949, the highest first-half total on record, reflecting continued confidence among Irish entrepreneurs.

Overall, the first half of 2026 tells a clear story: record levels of business creation, but also a more complex risk environment.

While entrepreneurial confidence remains strong, we’re starting to see modest increases in business failures and a more challenging operating environment, both of which highlight the importance of proactive risk management, realtime insight and informed decision-making.

Irish Start-Ups Hit a New Mid-Year Record

14,949 new companies formed in H1 2026, up 13% year-on-year

Company incorporations continued their upward trajectory in the first half of 2026, reaching 14,949 new companies, compared with 13,233 in the same period last year. This represents a 13% increase and the highest first-half total on record, underlining the resilience of entrepreneurial activity in Ireland even as financial pressures remain visible elsewhere in the economy.

Net Growth Remains Positive

Net +8,503 companies in H1 2026

Ireland added 8,503 net companies in the first half of 2026. Despite the rise in closures, start-up activity remained well ahead of dissolutions, with 14,949 new company registrations compared with 6,446 dissolutions. This continues to point to an active and expanding business base, even as churn increases.
